Seven compelling reasons your church needs to go mobile

Your church finally got around to building and launching a beautiful, shiny new website, so you sit back, waiting for the masses to come and consume your church’s online content. But after the initial surge of visitors, it seems that the church’s website traffic has, for all practical purposes, flatlined. What can you do to resuscitate it? It helps for the church to go social, and make its presence known on Facebook, Twitter, even Pinterest. But if your church really intends to go into all the world, it has to go mobile.

And therein lies the challenge. Pull out the mobile device from your own pocket or purse. Chances are, it can access the web. But have you tried navigating your church’s native website on your cell phone, or even a tablet? It’s like reading a book with an oversized magnifying glass; and your fingers will never look fatter as you attempt, with little success, to click on a link or to scroll through the church picnic photos on a touch-screen device. (The challenge is no less daunting with a mouse-and-keyboard oriented mobile device.)

Is your church out of touch with the rapidly growing mobile population? In 2012, and beyond, your church can reach more people, and across demographics of age, race, socioeconomic status, or education, through their mobile devices. More than one billion browser- and app-enabled mobile phones roam the globe, with the fastest growth in some of the least developed regions, not  even accounting for the millions of app-enabled tablets being activated daily. If your church has a message to spread, either to its local membership, or to the foreign mission field, mobile devices are an ideal conduit.

Here are 7 ways members and online visitors can consume church content on mobile devices:

  1. Watch or listen to live or prerecorded sermons
  2. Read the bulletin, calendar, or blog
  3. Submit requests for prayer or other needs
  4. Navigate to the church’s location
  5. Purchase or reserve products and services, such as concert tickets
  6. Contribute monetary gifts, such as tithe and offering
  7. Access, from your mobile product, to other services, like Bible or reference apps

Thanks for the insight! I am neither a pastor or a church IT guy, but as a church member, I would like to see church apps with useful stuff like a “spiritual gifts” quiz or daily devotionals.
